Understanding the lymphatic system

Like the blood system, the lymphatic system contributes to our health. While the blood system circulates blood, the lymphatic system circulates lymph throughout the body.

The lymphatic system plays a major role in the immune system and helps maintain the body’s fluid balance. The lymph nodes filter out harmful cells for elimination by the body’s defense system. Lymphatic vessels transport lymph (composed of fluid, proteins and cellular debris) from the body’s tissues to the heart. Lymphatic circulation is facilitated by the contraction of lymphatic vessels, the movement of muscles during exercise, and deep breathing.
