For all lymphedemas
- Avoid prolonged exposure to high heat, such as saunas, hot tubs and overheated exercise rooms.
- As far as possible, avoid staying in the same position for too long.
For arm lymphedema
- Protect your hands and nails. Don’t cut your cuticles.
- Wear a well-fitting bra with wide, supple straps and well-distributed support. Avoid whalebone bras. Remove jewelry, watches and bracelets that are too tight.
- When receiving a manicure, inform the staff that you are at risk of lymphedema and that the equipment used must be properly sterilized.
- Wear medical gloves for food preparation, rubber gloves for household chores and gardening gloves for outdoor work.
For leg lymphedema
- Protect your feet and nails. Don’t cut your cuticles.
- Wear comfortable stockings, tights and underwear without tight elastic bands.
- When receiving a pedicure, inform the staff that you are at risk of lymphedema and that the equipment used must be properly sterilized.
- Avoid walking barefoot. Wear closed shoes and comfortable socks.
