To maintain normal functioning during and after decongestion therapy, it's advisable to stay mobile and active. If you are starting a new physical activity, or resuming a training program, follow these tips:
- Get your doctor's and/or therapist's approval before starting or resuming any exercise program.
- Although studies show that exercise is beneficial, each person is different. Listen to your body, and rest when necessary.
- Measure your limbs once a month or before starting any new physical activity.
- Research suggests wearing a compression garment during and after exercise.
- Whether you're starting a new physical activity or resuming a training program, you need to progress slowly, at your own pace, being alert to any changes in swelling.
- If you have been treated for cancer and are not physically active, an exercise program can be started with the approval of your doctor or therapist, usually 3 months after the end of cancer treatment. Gentle forms of exercise, especially aerobics, are recommended before and during cancer treatment.
- Swimming, aquafitness, walking, light cycling, dancing, light aerobic exercise, gentle yoga, tai chi, qi gong, and any exercise you adapt to your condition are beneficial for general health and particularly for your lymphedema. These activities are also recommended during and after cancer treatment.
- Strength training can rebuild or restore strength, increase endurance, and improve muscle tone and power. People who are already physically active (e.g., weight training and vigorous activities) can gradually resume their exercise program as determined by the doctor and/or therapist.
- You can start resistance exercises as soon as your therapist has established that your lymphedema is stable. Progress slowly, using light weights and limiting repetitions, if possible, under the supervision of a qualified professional.
- Be more active. A number of exercises and educational programs have been studied. They have shown that exercise and an active lifestyle are beneficial. For proper guidance, please consult a certified lymphedema therapist.
